Trying to tap into that market would be a difficult task for anyone, even forSABMiller (NASDAQOTH: SBMRY ) ,the world's second largest brewer, which is why it undoubtedly figured that by hooking up with Canada's biggest operator, Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP ) , with 39% of the beer market, it would have an easier time of getting better distribution. Their MillerCoors joint venture was created in 2007 and mainly distributes beer in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, but it also allows Molson to market and distribute certain Miller brands in Canada.

There's no disputing the huge impact that Boston Beer has had on the brewing industry. Giant brewers Anheuser-Busch (NYSE: BUD ) and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP ) have stepped up with craft-like entrants of their own in an effort to capture the fast-growing craft-beer segment, yet many consumers of craft beers have fierce loyalty to smaller brands and are inclined to resist marketing pushes from bigger companies. Yet Boston Beer faces the challenge of having become the giant in its niche, risking the possibility of having its image change from up-and-coming underdog to domineering establishment-brewer over private microbrewing competitors.

Still, it's a sticky area. When you think of volume and sales growth some of the best, most "loyal" customers for companies like Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP ) , Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM ) , Anheuser-Busch (NYSE: BUD ) , and Brown-Forman (NYSE: BF-B ) are going to be some of their most addicted and most troubled ones. If enough people curbed their intake -- obviously an important part of many people getting well -- the industry would have a real problem to contend with. Like tobacco, a whole lot of quitters shrinks the market.
