Top Performing Stocks To Invest In 2014

NEW YORK December is the top-performing month for the Dow over the past 100 years. But this December has been nothing to brag about, as the Dow Jones industrial average has been down seven of 11 trading days and is off 1.1%, even after Monday's 129-point gain.

But investors shouldn't necessarily take away from the poor start the notion that Mr. Market is delivering a bag of coal instead of profits to investors this holiday season.

There's an old Wall Street saying, coined by the Stock Trader's Almanac, that says, "Wall Street's only 'free lunch' is served before Christmas."

So what's the play? The Almanac says investors tend to sell their losers in early December for year-end tax purposes, which often "hammers these stocks down to bargain levels." But an Almanac analysis also found that stocks that trade on the New York Stock Exchange that hit their lows on Dec. 15 "will usually outperform the overall market by Feb. 15 of the following year."

Another stock that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Atlatsa Resources (ATL), which engages in the mining, exploration and development of platinum group metals properties located in the Bushveld Igneous Complex in South Africa. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 198%.

If you take a look at the chart for Atlatsa Resources, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last two months and change, with shares soaring higher from its low of 28 cents per share to its intraday high of 46 cents per share. During that uptrend, shares of ATL have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. Shares of ATL have now started to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at 43 cents to 44 cents per share. That move is quickly pushing shares of ATL within range of triggering another big breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in ATL if it manages to break out above its 52-week high at 50 cents per share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 170,178 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then ATL will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are its next major overhead resistance levels at 63 cents to 73 cents per share, or even 80 cents per share.

Traders can look to buy ATL off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day moving average of 39 cents per share, or near more support at 37 cents per share. One can also buy ATL off strength once it clears its 52-week high at 50 cents with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

While a pillar in the multiple myeloma treatment landscape, it's possible that Revlimid could be facing competition from Amgen's (NASDAQ: AMGN  ) Kyprolis in a second-line indication if approved by the FDA in the U.S. and European Medicines Agency overseas. Also, AbbVie's (NYSE: ABBV  ) and Bristol-Myers Squibb's (NYSE: BMY  ) elotuzumab could pose a problem as a second-line therapy. Though elotuzumab is given in combination with Revlimid and a low-dose dexamethasone, going from a Revlimid-based maintenance therapy to something where Celgene is now splitting revenue as a combo therapy could slow its growth potential in the advanced multiple myeloma setting considerably. Also keep in mind that elotuzumab received the breakthrough therapy designation from the FDA in May.

Given that you clicked on this article, it seems safe to assume you either own stock in First Horizon National (NYSE: FHN  ) or are considering buying shares in the near future. If so, then you've come to the right place. The table below reveals the nine most critical numbers that investors need to know about First Horizon stock before deciding whether to buy, sell, or hold it.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

First Horizon National (NYSE: FHN) is expected to report its Q2 earnings at $0.17 per share on revenue of $286.98 million.

Synacor (NASDAQ: SYNC) is estimated to post a Q1 loss at $0.05 per share on revenue of $24.53 million.

  • [By Monica Gerson]

First Horizon National (NYSE: FHN) is estimated to report its Q3 earnings at $0.18 per share on revenue of $307.14 million.

Laboratory Corp. of America Holdings (NYSE: LH) is expected to report its Q3 earnings at $1.80 per share on revenue of $1.45 billion.

  • [By Sean Williams]

Finally, regional bank First Horizon National (NYSE: FHN  ) , which has banking branches throughout Tennessee, added 4.2% just a day after paying shareholders a $0.05 quarterly dividend. Like Genuine Parts, there is no company specific news driving First Horizon higher, but the prospect for a higher net interest margin because of higher interest rates is certainly adding a boost to banks like First Horizon that rely on traditional loan and deposit growth. But as my Foolish colleague John Maxfield recently pointed out, you may want to keep your expectations for First Horizon tempered in the interim.
