UPS system overload delays holiday packages

Thousands of holiday gifts won't arrive by Christmas after an unpredictably large number of packages overwhelmed UPS, the world's largest package delivery service.

"The volume of air packages in our system exceeded the capacity of our network, as demand was much greater than the forecast," UPS spokeswoman Natalie Godwin said Tuesday. "As a a result a small percentage of shipments are delayed and will not be delivered today."

Godwin would not say how many packages had been delayed, but the delays are nationwide.

UPS drivers will deliver packages on Christmas Eve, but will not deliver on Christmas Day. Workers at the company's Louisville hub will work on Wednesday night to sort packages so they can be delivered on Thursday. she said.

"We are using every available resource to get packages delivered," she said.

Customers hit by delays carped online and posted their tracking details on Twitter.

@LaneDouglas of Bethesda, Md. wrote "#Amazon Prime doesn't mean jack when #UPS tells you they had a carrier delay."

A woman in Saginaw, Tex., posted a tracking receipt that showed an order placed with The Disney Store on Dec. 17 won't arrive until after Christmas even though the items left Tennessee and arrived in nearby Fort Worth, Tex. at 8:05 p.m. Dec. 20.

UPS last week reported delays in the Dallas-Fort Worth area after severe weather hit the region. Godwin says the majority of customers who received notices last week of delays should receive their packages today. UPS does not guarantee Christmas delivery for ground shipping after Dec. 11.

American Capital Agency went public in 2008, a year that saw other mREITs such as Hatteras Financial (NYSE: HTS  ) , and Armour Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) enter the territory as well. Groundbreaker Annaly had shown that the carry trade could be lucrative, and the ultra-low short-term interest rate environment created a perfect climate for new companies to enter the playing field.

Hatteras Financial (NYSE: HTS  ) was one of the worst performers during the period despite following a relatively conservative strategy of investing mostly in adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) mortgage-backed securities, as opposed to fixed-rate 30-year MBSes that can often carry a larger interest rate risk.

Good news on consumer spending in November, Apple's (AAPL) iPhone deal with China Mobile (CHL), and an upgrade on US economic prospects in 2014, from International Monetary Fund's (IMF) managing director Christine Lagarde, pretty much guarantees that Santa will visit Wall Street this year. And just about on schedule. The Santa Claus rally is short and, in most years, sweet. It takes in the last five trading sessions of the old year and the first two trading sessions of the new. The average annual gain for that period, since 1972, for the Standard & Poor's 500 (SPX) is about 1.5%, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

From a macroeconomic viewpoint, our optimism for Asian marketsstrong long-term potential is based on three main factors. First, when compared with developed markets generally, Asia emerging markets have had higher rates of historic economic growth, and growth expectations for the year ahead are generally higher as well. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) projects growth in developing Asia of 6.5% in 2014, compared with 2% in developed markets generally.1Since 1999, the region has seen strong growth even in 2009 when developed markets fell into recession, as you can see in the chart below.

Economically/p> The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has lowered its estimate of world Gross Domestic Product(GDP) growth going forward. Germany (the strongest economy in Europe) has reported disappointing numbers, particularly in capital goods. It looks like Europe is back in recession. The U.S. Federal Reserve Bank (Fed) lowered its estimates of U.S. GDP growth for the next four years. Crude oil, which was trading in a range of $100-$110/barrel, fell to $82/barrel The surprise was an announcement by Saudi Arabia that they would not try to keep the price above $100/barrel. 5 Small-Cap Stocks Poised to Pop When the Shutdown Ends

LinkedIn Logo RSS Logo James Brumley Popular Posts: 5 Small-Cap Stocks Poised to Pop When the Shutdown Ends4 Sizzling Stocks That Analysts HateSHLD: Same Fate as JCPenney, It’s Just Taking a Different Route Recent Posts: 5 Small-Cap Stocks Poised to Pop When the Shutdown Ends What to Know Before eBay Earnings 4 Sizzling Stocks That Analysts Hate View All Posts

up arrowWhile the government shutdown has been tough for most of the market, a handful of stocks in certain industries have been hit particularly hard by the budget impasse in Washington D.C.

There is good news, though — once the political posturing is done, the budget is approved, and the debt-limit raised, the hardest-hit names should rally back equally well. Budget approval is how this will all end sooner or later, so a recovery is simply a matter of time.

These five small-cap stocks are particularly well-positioned to snap back from their recent slump.

DryShips

DryShips 185How does the government’s shutdown affect maritime shipping demand? It doesn't … at least not directly.

However, there’s an indirect consequence on the shipping industry when certain government offices are shuttered. The closure of the National Agriculture Statistic Service, for instance, has meant farmers and commodity buyers don’t have access to their usual demand, supply, and price reports. In turn, since these growers don’t know what their goods are worth, they’re not selling many, if at all. Ditto on the buying end.

But what does that have to do with maritime shipping, and dry-bulk shipping in general? If the food commodity market has ground to a halt, then the need to ship dry-bulk goods has also been crimped. Once the key agricultural offices reopen and price information starts flowing again, demand for transportation services will ramp up.

First in line for that rebound is small cap shipper DryShips (DRYS), which has seen its shares slide 13% since their late-September peak.

American Public Education

APEI 185As if the for-profit education sector needed any more headaches — after a wave of accreditation scrutiny earlier in the year — the shutdown may have thrown them out of the frying pan and into the fire.

See, with the shutdown now lasting more than a week, the number of people processing federal aid has been reduced due to furloughs, which in turn means there’s a backlog of aid applications. It won’t affect students who are already enrolled in the fall semester; they’ve all received their aid already. Not every for-profit school follows the traditional two-semester calendar though, and a few of them cater to a student base that relies heavily on this now-backlogged aid.

American Public Education (APEI) has been one of the biggest victims of the DOE’s partial shutdown. The 41,000 individual online classes scheduled to begin a few days ago were reduced by 13,000 when many military and government employees lost their tuition assistance as of October 1st.

APEI has been under plenty of selling pressure of late, but the mere whiff of a budget deal has already prodded the stock upward again. Given time for the effects of an approved budget to kick in, the stock should continue to climb as more students flock back to school, spurred by freely flowing financial aid.

Lifeway Foods

Lifeway Foods 185Just for the sake of clarity, though the budget-related shutdown isn’t helping dairy farms, it’s not the lone reason dairy companies have been struggling of late. Mostly they’re the victims of a soon-to-expire (on December 31st) dairy-price stabilization bill.

The primary worry is that Congress will greatly alter the usual terms of the bill in order to come to some sort of budget consensus, leaving the dairy business unable to support itself. The lesser worry is that the shutdown will last through the December 31st deadline, preventing the introduction of any kind of new farm bill in the meantime, which means law from 1949 will be re-instituted by default. Either way, the price of milk for consumers would theoretically skyrocket and end up pricing dairy products right out of the market for these small-cap stocks.

Once the budget impasse is wrapped up though, a new Dairy Stabilization Act should be right around the corner. That’s good news for a small-cap company like dairy farm Lifeway Foods (LWAY), which saw its shares fall nearly 25% over the course of August and September when the budget impasse was shaping up.

Carrols Restaurant Group

Carrols 185It sounds a little too obvious to be true, but apparently, furloughed employees really do stop eating out when they’re not receiving a paycheck, even though they can remain relatively confident they’ll be back to work sooner than later. History says about three weeks’ worth of shutdown starts to take a measurable toll on the nation’s personal consumption.

Larger restaurant chains can handle the lull. A less liquid small-cap name like Carrols Restaurant Group (TAST), however, feels the pain pretty intensely. That’s why shares are down about 8% this month.

Once those 800,000 furloughed employees start getting a paycheck again though, Carrols shares should work their way right back up to where they came from.

The Ryland Group

The Ryland Group Inc. (NYSE: RYL)While most of the federal government’s mortgage loan-guarantee programs (like the FHA) are still operating, many of them are operating on thinner staff, meaning it’s taking longer to complete the lending process. And, for certain loan types and agencies that require annual funding (like FHA’s multifamily housing office or the USDA), they’re not backing any mortgage loans until further notice … which is to say, until the government’s bank account is refilled.

The reduction in the number of loan approvals as well as a reduction in the length of time to get a loan approved certainly hasn’t helped homebuilders like The Ryland Group (RYL); RYL shares are down almost 5% in October.

But the bigger threat to Ryland is the sheer uncertainty of buying a home in a foggy real estate environment. Once the shutdown ends and the lending gears get oiled again, however, Ryland and other small cap stocks in the industry should perk right back up.

As of this writing, James Brumley did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

Could Cummins run out of gas?
The downside to Cummins' business is that many of the factors that can affect its demand are well beyond its control. Low natural gas prices, for instance, help push trucking companies and government agencies to switch their existing gasoline and diesel engine fleets over to cleaner burning natural gas engines. In fact, the joint venture between Cummins and Westport Innovations (NASDAQ: WPRT  ) is built upon getting heavy-duty fleets to make this change. However, with natural gas prices having doubled over the past year from $2/mbtu to more than $4/mbtu, it threatens to close the price gap advantage that natural gas held over traditional fuels and could slow demand for this joint venture.

Stocks Slip from Record Highs as Investors Digest Fed Direction

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- U.S. stocks slipped on Thursday as investors processed a barrage of economic data a day after the S&P 500 reached new highs driven by the Federal Reserve's pledge to maintain its $85 billion a month bond-buying program pending stronger evidence of a healthy U.S. economy.

The S&P 500 fell 0.2% to 1,722.34 while the Dow Jones Industrial Average was dropped 0.3% to 15,636.55. The Nasdaq rose 0.2% to 3,789.38.

The Fed on Wednesday said it will maintain its current level of asset purchases given that the unemployment rate remains "elevated," mortgage rates have risen and economic growth appears still to be restrained.

Bank stocks tumbled led by JPMorgan Chase  (JPM)after the country's bank was hit with$920 million in finesby regulators in the U.S. and the UK, stemming from its massive hedge-trading losses in 2012. Shares lost 1.2% to $52.75. Wells Fargo  (WFC)lost 0.85% to $42.96 as the bank confirmed plans for 1,800 additional layoffsof mortgage production staff, according to a Bloomberg report.

Bank of America (BAC) fell 0.7% to $14.61.

A spate of economic reports offered investors a mostly positive view of the U.S. economic recovery.

Existing home sales rose to their highest level in six-and-a-half yearsin August as median prices rose nearly 15% year-on-year, defying expectations for a slowdown caused by rising interest rates. Also, the Philly Fed index of manufacturing activity surged to 22.3 in September, reversing the deceleration seen during the previous month and coming in above expectations of a rise up to 10.

Meanwhile, the Conference Board's Index of Leading Economic Indicators meanwhile showed a sharp rise in August following strong gains in July, marking a resumption of an upward trend after a brief pause.

A rise in initial jobless claims during a non-farm payrolls survey week was reported by the Labor Department Thursday. Claims increased by 15,000 to 309,000 in the week of Sept. 14 after the prior week's figure was revised to 294,000 from 292,000 or what had been the lowest initial claims print since March 2006 thanks to state computer system upgrade that resulted in delayed claims processing. It's expected that the computer system upgrades will require a few more weeks to be completed.

Agilent Technologies (A) was one of the top gainers in the S&P 500, surging 3.4% to $50.98 after saying it will split into two independent publicly-traded companies. One will be focused on life sciences, diagnostics and applied markets, retaining the Agilent name, and the other will be focused on electronic measurement, which will be named later.

Tesla (TSLA) jumped 7.1% to $177.92 after an analyst raised his price target on the stock, citing better-than-expected margin expectations for the third quarter.

Advisors' Opinion:

Unfortunately for XTO Energy, there was one small and, unbeknownst to anyone, unresolved matter. You see, LINN had a contract to sell its gas through a unit of Dominion Resources (NYSE: D  ) , which was gathering the gas in its system. However, LINN's gas wasn't up to the system's standards, so it began to look for another gatherer and it approached Equitrans, which is now part of EQT Midstream Partners (NYSE: EQM  ) but formerly was a unit of EQT Corp. (NYSE: EQT  ) -- they talked, but nothing was signed. However, an EQT employee later that year thought that it had and began crediting gas to the wrong company.

Top 5 Promising Stocks To Watch Right Now: Lee Enterprises Incorporated (LEE)

Lee Enterprises, Incorporated provides local news, information, and advertising services primarily in midsize or small markets in the United States. The company publishes 50 daily and 39 Sunday newspapers, 300 weekly newspapers and classified, and niche publications in 22 states; and provides retail, classified, digital, and national advertising services. It also provides digital infrastructure and digital publishing services for approximately 1,500 daily and weekly newspapers and shoppers. The company was founded in 1890 and is based in Davenport, Iowa.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jeff Reeves]

Newspapers are hardly a growth industry, but after such a horrible fall from grace, publisher Lee Enterprises (LEE) may be a decent investment once more.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another newspaper publishing player that looks ready to trigger a major breakout trade is Lee Enterprises (LEE), which is a provider of local news and information and a platform for advertising, in primarily midsize markets. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up big by 154%.

    >>Hack Earnings Season With These Serial Surprisers

If you take a look at the chart for Lee Enterprises, you'll notice that this stock is just starting to spike higher back above its 50-day moving average of $2.89 a share with strong upside volume. Volume already today has registered over 360,000 shares, which is quickly approaching its three-month average action of 399,735 shares. This move is quickly pushing shares of LEE within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in LEE if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.14 a share to its 52-week high at $3.20 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 399,735 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then LEE will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $4 to $5 a share.

Traders can look to buy LEE off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $2.71 or at $2.60 a share. One could also buy LEE off strength once it takes out those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

  • [By Mike Arnold]

I look at Glacier as one part Lee Enterprises (LEE) (community newspapers), one part Daily Journal Corp. (DJCO) (business/trade publications) with a splash of web start up. If Glacier were a drink, it would make for a delectable cocktail. Instead, its shares make for compelling investment aperitif at current prices.

5 Best Retail Stocks To Own For 2014

SEATTLE The hackers responsible for the wave of breaches at big retailers this holiday season very likely began testing a method to infect thousands of point-of-sale systems in big retail chains in January 2013.

"This is a well-funded adversary taking their time to develop very specific malware to go after very specific targets and a big payday," says Chris Petersen, chief technology officer at security intelligence firm LogRhythm. "This is organized crime applied to cybercrime."

Last April, Visa issued an alert to retailers about network intrusions targeting POS data at grocery merchants in early 2013. The technique discovered by the payment card giant involved installing a memory-parsing program on Windows-based cash register systems and back-of-house (BOH) servers. The clever piece of malware was designed to extract data from magnetic-striped payment card transactions.

Andy Wong/AP Alibaba (BABA) is the new belle of the dot-com ball in China. The e-commerce juggernaut pulled off a record initial public offering in September when it raised $25 billion on the way to becoming a public company. Analysts love Alibaba. They were able to initiate coverage on Wednesday, following the 40-day quiet period that follows an IPO's debut. Only one of its underwriters -- Goldman Sachs -- failed to tap it as a buy recommendation. It's easy to see the appeal. Alibaba helped 231 million active buyers place 11.3 billion orders totaling $248 billion in transactions last year, and it's just getting started. However, the stock, with its nearly $250 billion market cap, isn't cheap. Let's look at some Chinese dot-coms that have been trading longer and could be more compelling bargains. Baidu (BIDU) China's leading search engine posted another blowout quarter on Wednesday, just as analysts were gushing all over Alibaba. The company behind China's largest search engine saw revenue soar 52 percent over the prior year's third quarter. Earnings climbed just 27 percent, but that was twice as fast as analysts were expecting. Baidu is investing in low-margin online specialties including travel, video and mobile app storefronts, and that weighs on bottom-line growth. Baidu remains one of China's biggest winners. It went public nine years ago at a split-adjusted price of $2.70, and now it trades north of $200. Baidu fulfills roughly two-thirds of all queries, and it is rocking at a time when its profitability is still suppressed. 51job (JOBS) Matching employees to potential hires started out with old-school tech for 51job. It got its start by inserting weekly job listings in more than two dozen leading Chinese newspapers. Then the Internet came along, allowing 51job to convert its thick Rolodex and respected brand into a leading online recruiter. It's working: 51job is growing its revenue in the low double digits. It's trading at a reasonable 22 time

    J. Scott Applewhite/AP WASHINGTON -- A cyberattack similar to previous hacker intrusions from China penetrated computer networks for months at USIS, the government's leading security clearance contractor, before the company noticed, officials and others familiar with an FBI investigation and related official inquiries told The Associated Press. The breach, first revealed by the company and government agencies in August, compromised the private records of at least 25,000 employees at the Homeland Security Department and cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars in lost government contracts. In addition to trying to identify the perpetrators and evaluate the scale of the stolen material, the government inquiries have prompted concerns about why computer detection alarms inside the company failed to quickly notice the hackers and whether federal agencies that hired the company should have monitored its practices more closely. Former employees of the firm, U.S. Investigations Services, also have raised questions about why the company and the government failed to ensure that outdated background reports containing personal data weren't regularly purged from the company's computers. Details about the investigation and related inquiries were described by federal officials and others familiar with the case. The officials spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment publicly on the continuing criminal investigation, the others because of concerns about possible litigation. A computer forensics analysis by consultants hired by the company's lawyers defended USIS' handling of the breach, noting it was the firm that reported the incident. The analysis said government agencies regularly reviewed and approved the firm's early warning system. In the analysis, submitted to federal officials in September and obtained by the AP, the consultants criticized the government's decision in August to indefinitely halt the firm's backg

Lynn Watson/Shutterstock Last year, Target (TGT) fumbled its entry into Canada. Then, a data breach torpedoed its Christmas shopping season sales. (Maybe you heard of it?) Then it lost its CEO. It's been a litany of despair for Target shareholders, as the stock shed 13 percent over the past six months. It didn't begin or end with the revelation that hackers had broken into Target computers and stolen 40 million debit and credit card numbers. (In fact, Target shares have been trending downwards for nearly a year). But here's the good news: The breach doesn't seem to have affected Target's popularity with its customers one bit. Target Can't Be Knocked Down That's the surprising conclusion of a poll just recently released by Bloomberg, which concluded that none of the bad news that has frightened off Target investors has had much of an impact on Target customers. To the contrary, according to Bloomberg's national poll, conducted May 8-11, only about 7 percent of Target customers say they're likely to spend less at Target over the next year than they did in the previous year. Meanwhile, 85 percent say they expect to shop about as much at Target this year as they did last year. And 7 percent -- a number equal to those who say they'll spend less -- told Bloomberg that they are inclined to spend more at Target this year than they did last year. These shoppers appear to be backing up their words with actions. In Target's most recent earnings report, released in May, it was confirmed that despite the data breach, and despite the CEO's exit, Target's quarterly revenues climbed 2 percent in comparison to the previous year's quarter. If these numbers didn't sound strange enough already, you'd better sit down for this next bit. According to Bloomberg's poll, only "about half" of Target customers say they are confident that the company "will be able to keep credit and debit-card information safe from here on in." So apparently, customers are fully aware of the data br
